[There is a large crater in the ground around him when Verlaine blinks to find himself back in the natural light of the surrounding forest, his breaths coming fast, twitching fingers still flickering with enough gravitational pull that small bits of rock seem unwilling to leave his gloves. The pressure of the blast had created enough thermal heat that there's a dusty, lingering smoke rising from beneath his shoes.
That wasn't real.
It wasn't. It couldn't have been. And yet —
He had been number twelve, the final one. He always will be. Stumbling into that research facility — if it even existed, there's no trace of it now, and besides that, it shouldn't exist, it can't exist — had brought it all back, just like that. The true place was long gone, obliterated along with Pan, but now...
Beyond all his hatred, misery, and loneliness, the other piece which would have been gladly lost with his death was the memories that formed that perfect foundation for it all. Unfortunately, losing Brutalization did not make him lose the recollection of how he was fashioned to carry that beast that came with it. It did not make him forget the prick and slice of medical instruments, the constant buzz of machines in the rooms as he was observed, the feeling of his own muscles acting as traitor, priming him to take action that he did not want. The very first time he ever moved his hands in a way he truly wanted was when he killed Pan. He regretted, for a long while, not taking his time more with him, exerting every bit of autonomy and control over his fingers to slowly make it hurt, hurt, hurt, hurt —
Verlaine wrings out either of his hands. The small fragments of rock and ruin lingering at them go flying, too fast, into the woods. It takes all of a moment to orient himself before he's headed to the inn, gravity used in his favor to get there in leaps and bounds. Then, sharp eyes count the windows to identify Chuuya's room that he'd stopped at before. It's just that this time, Verlaine is on the outside rather than the inside.
When the glass of that window shatters, and the wall flung outward with it, Verlaine doesn't even hesitate before stepping his way inside to grab the back of Chuuya's collar. He sends one lone, withering look at Dazai, who happens to avoid all the flying debris leaving the room, and takes Chuuya with him with a sudden yank.
(If Dazai's own clever gaze notices that Verlaine's composure is in tatters, Verlaine doesn't want to give him a chance to say so.)
Where Verlaine takes his brother hardly matters. Somewhere with less of these people that Chuuya cares so much about. Somewhere more open, if still surrounded by trees. Somewhere that, when he tosses Chuuya down heedless of how Chuuya lands, and drops down alongside him, no one else will hear when he demands —]
[ He really ought to stop hanging around men with such destructive hobbies.
One moment he is lounging lazily in Chuuya’s bed as a byproduct of the more recent developments in their dynamic and in the next the entire wall just about explodes. Dazai, who by this point is rather used to things being folded like paper, hardly bats an eye as an unexpected visitor steps his way through the gargantuan hole he’s blasted in the side of the inn.
Dazai’s eyes are sharp. They make eye contact for a fraction of a second and he notes the fraught shape of that expression and raises an eyebrow in reply. His fingers flutter in a wave that is more cheek than disdain. ]
Bring him back before dark~.
[ Chuuya could take care of himself. And, if it truly became necessary, Dazai would assuredly be able to track the two of them down. ]
[Chuuya feels something coming. It's hard to say if he picks up on the way gravity seems to bow beneath Verlaine's command, or if he simply has a latent sense for his brother's presence. Regardless, he has enough time to both bark a warning and shift away from the immediate impact. Though he's able to shield himself without so much as thinking, the dust in the air keeps him from picking up on where Verlaine is exactly, at least not until he's been essentially scruffed and hauled out of the room.
To his credit, he does not immediately flail or protest. A withering look is fixed on Dazai as he's dragged out (seriously? not even a little help), but beyond that, he keeps his peace. Picking a fight with Verlaine in midair was only going to result in casualties below. Instead, he curls his body enough to avoid any additional impact. It has the added benefit of helping him orient properly as he spills out from Verlaine's grasp. He lands in a low crouch, staring up at the other man almost in anticipation.
If it was going to be a fight, he would need to move quickly and away from the Grove. He's heard bad things about what would happen beyond the fog wall, should he venture there without adequate protection. He'd just have to hope that danger saw Verlaine as more of a threat.
That attack doesn't come, however. He doesn't expect quite the outburst. Even up against death itself, Verlaine had remained composed — at least up until N interfered. That he's so ruffled by the situation at hand almost fills Chuuya with more dread than the idea of a fight.
He straightens himself up slowly, eyes never once leaving Verlaine. He dusts off his shoulders, then folds his arms over his chest. When he speaks, his tone is even, devoid of any of the surprise that had underlined the rest of this incident. This, at least, is predictable.]
[That look and warning from Dazai — Verlaine would like to say he can't be annoyed with him, but alas, old habits die hard. Still. As if they could be any closer —
But Dazai doesn't stop him from pulling Chuuya away, and Chuuya doesn't stop himself from being carried away, and so either Verlaine has lost his touch, or these two really aren't that concerned about such an entrance. If he was capable of the foresight right now, he might be offended.]
Don't look at me like that. Not you.
[The words come out before Verlaine can manage anything else, sounding like the crack of thinning ice on a winter lake. 'Like that' — like Verlaine might very well lunge across the space and do something they'd both regret. He flexes his fingers, slow and steady, trying to regain whatever he'd lost by following that vision through the underground, through the lab, through the reflections of those still yet to wake...
He exhales. He touches the brim of his hat, pauses; his voice becomes slightly less brittle.]
How the hell am I meant to look at you, when you're the one breakin' into my room.
[Though he's quick with his words, there's a little less bite to them. There's something in that tone that Chuuya recognizes, a level of fragility he's all too familiar with. Chuuya himself had lain awake at night for years, grappling with how his skin crawled when someone that was supposed to matter looked at him like a threat.
It was stupid, really. Verlaine had more than earned Chuuya's ire. In what he could only assume had been a single second, the lives of the only people he'd cared about had been snuffed out. There was more blood on Verlaine's hands than Chuuya could ever fathom.
And yet late at night, he found his mind circling a single thought — the same one that he had shared with Verlaine himself before what should have been the final blow was struck. If things had been just slightly different, Chuuya and Verlaine's positions could have been reversed.
And if that were true, Chuuya would hope that he would be spared the same level of malice and distrust.]
I don't have an answer. [His own words bring him back to the present. He shifts his footing, a little uneasy now.] Still piecin' together what the hell is happening here. They say there's somethin' in the Forest that can twist your mind, and it gets off on tormenting us.
[An extremely uncomfortable thought, especially for two gifted who had been born in the clutches of those who wanted to do just the same. How different was it, really, to be poked and prodded by the forest compared to the scientists that had created them.
Chuuya hardly realizes he's begun to pace.]
Just before you showed up, someone corrupted by this place started wreaking havoc. Wound up dead, with his soul shattered. [His head shakes.] Whatever hell you've gone up against back in Europe, it has nothin' on this.
And I thought Fyodor and the vampires were bad enough.
[ For a moment, he is concerned he has misstepped. But only for a moment. The affection floods through their connection and warms Dazai down to the bone, impossibly. It is almost enough to pierce through the fog of his own malaise. Especially when Chuuya lurches away as if he’s been unceremoniously shocked, red in the face and spitting like an angry cat.
Normally, Dazai might have taken advantage of the opportunity to tease. He even considers it for a fraction of a moment as the insults fly through Chuuya’s subconscious like bullets. But then that word pushes to the front of their conjoined minds, heavy and laden with intensity: mine.
Embarrassingly enough, Dazai is quick to join him in his floundering after that. Especially when the word repeats, like the first line of a mantra. The possessiveness surprises, but not in an unpleasant way. Far from it. As soon as the shock has worn off, a wave of fondness of his own blooms… and then is followed in rather short order by a curl of warm interest that is unbidden.
He somehow finds it within himself to say something that is aligned to his usual modus operandi, but lacking the usual barb. Instead, there is a… sickeningly obvious lilt of excitement. ]
[Well, isn't this just a dangerous turn of events. Chuuya feels that excitement within his own body, out of place for only a second — just long enough for him to figure out that it doesn't start as his own. Yet as he follows the strand that line of thought takes, he cannot deny the flit of his own longing.
Not that it completely overpowers the humiliation there. He stiffens all the more when his desire is placed beneath the microscope. Predictably, his response comes in the form of a hiss.]
Shut up! [His voice cracks at the end, and doesn't that just make matters all the worse.] Been a thorn in my side for how long now? Don't need to stake a claim when you're already stuck there.
[And yet the harmonious cascade of emotions only continues to grow, a consistent feedback chain of warmth between the two of them. It's dizzying. It's exhausting. And yet through it all, it feels intoxicating. Before he can stop himself, he wonders how that the connective tissue between the two of them might feel when that boundary is crossed, how a touch upon one body would feel upon the other.
[ Finally, remarkably, and seemingly against all odds, a smile curls onto Dazai’s mouth and remains. It is still a shallow thing, not certain of its placement, but it remains. For all the question had provoked Chuuya’s embarrassed ire, it had twofold purpose: a genuine question of whether Chuuya would repeat that word aloud, and an unspoken prompt to do so. Unfortunately, the humiliation had caught up first.
But he can tell Chuuya wants him. He will also, assuredly, be able to feel the way Dazai, quietly pleased in the wake of their trip through the emotional wringer, thrills at that. They are momentarily of a mind as Dazai wonders how deep the feedback loop would thread.
He’s able to laugh, at least. Another part of him feels the strangest urge to cry. He hasn’t done so in years, and yet.
He tries to loop his arms around Chuuya’s neck, uncaring for the moment about how they are still very much in public. With how the space operated here, who rightly cared! ]
Does that mean Chuuya’s mine too, since we’re stuck together?
[Maybe Chuuya might have mouthed off some more, dug himself an impossible hole for the sake of getting away from the electricity crackling between the two of them. But when he finds, beneath it all, a flicker of something mournful, that desire goes out of the window.
That's just like him. Always bending over backwards to please someone else. At least this time, there was something in it for him. Something dangerous, sure, but it wasn't as if this line hadn't already been crossed. A lot had been shared over the last several moments, plenty of things he will never be able to take back.
And yet he cannot help but feel envigorated. Yes, the sigh that leaves Chuuya's lips is a withering one, but it's significantly defanged. He does not try to shoulder off Dazai's arms, but instead melts backward into the embrace. His hand lifts, pinching Dazai's chin between his fingers.]
That's exactly what you want, isn't it? For me to admit that you hold my leash? I'm onto you. [And yet beneath the bark, there is no bite. There is only his treacherous mind and the unrestrained agreement echoing through their bond.] People're gonna talk, if you keep that up.
[It isn't a protest, not really. But for someone who liked to keep his cards close to his chest, maybe Dazai would appreciate the warning.]
[ If Chuuya truly wanted it, Dazai would back off and that would be the end of it. He would take it as a sign that their night together would forever be relegated to a one-night affair and accept it. It would gnaw at him, yes, but it would be another burden to add to his ever-growing abundance of them. The last thing he would want in this moment would be to force Chuuya.
The fact he does not shove Dazai away seems a positive sign, at least. The fingers pinching at his chin reconfirm that and, for the moment, Dazai is more than happy to be held. The smile on his face is still slight, but a hint less weary. ]
Is that what they’re calling it these days? [ What a strange and confusing sentence that he is absolutely not going to elaborate on or clarify! A true Dazai special. ]
It would hardly be the worst rumor that’s ever spread about me, but if Chuuya is worried about his status as an eligible bachelor being called into question… [ He leans in, eyes curling with building warmth. ] Are you?
[ Hi Chuuya. Hiiii, Chuuya. Here comes your number one beloathed, wretched rival, ambling about in their ridiculously white new temporary reality. It's boring walking around this place alone and, as of yet, he's gained absolutely no meaningful knowledge about it on his lonesome. Which means he gets to talk a break to bother Chuuya about it! Yay!
It's relatively easy to track him down, all things considered. He just has to follow the string of his easily recognizable thoughts. He keeps his mind relatively blank because, all of a sudden, he's intent on... sneaking up on Chuuya? Yeah. ]
[Chuuya's thoughts are very loud right now, so thankfully Dazai should be able to find his way right to him. Not that he's anywhere surprising. He's squirreled himself away in the hyperspace equivalent of his inn room, and is currently massaging some sort of... grey... paste? Across his skin?
If this is what somehow manages to kill me, I'm gonna lodge a complaint. Not that I know who to complain to. Maybe I'll deck that forest monster in the face. Bet I could take him. Definitely could with corruption.
You know. Normal thoughts. Normal and completely oblivious to the fact that someone has entered the room or is trying to startle him.]
[ Don't mind Dazai, opening the door sooooo slowly and soooo quietly. When he peeks inside and witnesses whatever tomfoolery Chuuya is currently up to, he almost turns around and leaves. But... maybe this was related to those... skincare complaints he was making on the Netbook? Fascinating!
He takes Chuuya's internal monologue on the chin as he creeps inside. When he is less than a foot away, he hops forward, puts both hands up, and loudly declares: ]
[Mid-dip into the bowl, Chuuya's hands immediately fly upward. A yelp leaves him as he takes a step back, falling onto a defensive posture. Does he look ridiculous, covered in a chalky face mask? Absolutely.
The problem is that Chuuya's flailing has knocked the bowl into the air. While he's able to inadvertently clear out of the way, Dazai is in the splash zone of the remaining, ah... substance.
Oops.]
Oi!! [Chuuya finds he has to bite back laughter, even through his fury.] The hell are you doing, dipshit?! I coulda killed you.
[ Talk about a prank backfiring and also succeeding with flying colors. Whatever triumph Dazai feels at the fact that Chuuya outright yelps is quickly tempered by the contents in the bowl splattering all over his face and down the front of his shirt. Dazai yelps in turn, flinching like an oversized cat.
Whatever Chuuya is saying is going to be practically drowned out. ]
[ Once Chuuya had absconded from the bar, Dazai had had to grapple with the stark reality that playing the game simply wasn't as enjoyable without him there. There was no one to tease, no one who would scold him the second he did something ridiculous or jealousy-inducing... and he had done much and more to stoke Chuuya's possessiveness that evening. It is why Dazai peels away from the game exactly one round after Chuuya has departed.
He steps outside with a lazy sigh, then sets off in the general direction of the inn. Unhurriedly, mind you! ]
[It takes less time than Dazai might think for Chuuya to find him. As he passes by the clinic, he'll hear the faint sound of feet landing in the dirt, of clothes rustling in the wind. It's the only warning he gets before Chuuya's hand slips around his waist, cigarette hanging from his lips and his brow firmly set.
Immediately they deviate off course, aiming instead for the nearby trees.]
[ ... he had been anticipating his course being waylaid by Chuuya at some point, but it does happen quicker than he might have guessed. His senses are more than sharp enough to pick up the sound of feet hitting the dirt — Chuuya dropping down from atop the building, perhaps? Or had he been suspended in midair? — and even if they had not, the smell of tobacco is a dead giveaway.
What he isn't anticipating is the direction Chuuya steers them in. He quirks a brow down at him. ]
What an unexpected pleasure, slug! Where exactly are we going?
[Chuuya doesn't answer. There's something tight in his throat, however, a potent mixture of rage and longing that he worries might warp his voice. Instead, it shudders through that connection between them, along with an image of both of them, obscured by trees.
Even if Dazai doesn't get the hint there, he'll understand soon enough. As soon as they're even slightly obscured by a tree, he shifts a hand to Dazai's shoulder and presses down, hard as he can. Given the awkward angle, it wouldn't be a surprise if Dazai managed to slip away but... He sure can try, right?]
[ Oh? Someone is upset. Had the game really ruffled him up that terribly? He hardly has to wait long for the answer, even if it comes in the form of Chuuya’s hand pressing down against his shoulder hard enough for it to sting. For a moment, Dazai contemplates dancing away. Would Chuuya chase him through the trees or simply let him go?
But only for a moment. He drops to his knees, the corners of his mouth curling into a faint smirk. ]
[ Watching Chuuya painstakingly go through the motions of ensuring the tattoo gun is primed for their unwise task instills a confusing affection in Dazai. For as impulsive as he had made the idea seem, he has clearly gone out of his way to both ascertain how the tool worked and make sure that all aspects of the process were as sanitized as possible. This suggests a level of planning that belied the mere concept of it being a stupid, throwaway idea.
He thinks to suggest a piece of jewelry rather than a permanently marred patch of skin. But, then again – when had he ever cared all that much about marring his own skin? What, truly, was the difference in Chuuya's hand doing so than his own?
Before the question has even fully formed in his mind he knows that it is not a comparable instance. What he had done to himself had been performed in moments where it seemed the only solution to the depth of his misery. This was gentle by comparison, even when it promised hurt. If Dazai reacted with even a sliver of the same distress as he did when he hurt himself, Chuuya would be just as likely to stop.
Even now, Chuuya gives him an option. An escape route. Dazai turns his own misgivings over and over in his own head. ]
I'm nervous. [ He says, suddenly, surprising himself. He tries not to fidget, lest it disrupt the effort Chuuya has put into cleaning the spot of skin in question. He doesn't know what to anticipate from the confession. ]
[Chuuya stills, almost surprised by what the man has to say. When Dazai had suggested as much earlier, it felt like little more than an act. He was woefully good at putting on airs, making himself seem simpering and demure, rather than the calculated genius he was. It served him well, hiding his feelings from anyone who might try to turn them against him. And in this instance, it had been enough to fool Chuuya.
When it's brought up again, however, Chuuya pauses. The gun remains in his fingers, but only out of necessity, lest he need to clean it all over again. He does pass it back and forth between his hands, contemplating what he ought to say to something like that.
It's a strange thing, the idea of Osamu Dazai being nervous. That, in a way, his weakness. Dazai rarely confessed to having those. It adds a level of gravity into the work Chuuya is doing, the closest thing he's come to doubting his decision up until this point.]
Okay. [To some it might sound flippant. Chuuya is only trying to acknowledge the fact that Dazai has said it.] Do you know why?
[ God, Chuuya's reaction almost makes the entire situation that much worse. While Dazai is not a creature who balks easily, he wars with his own shame on a near daily basis. That he has allowed himself to show and vocalize vulnerability and seemingly caught Chuuya off-guard with it has him nearly shoving away. Instead, he glances between the ceiling and that still face a fair number of times as he turns the potential words over in his head.
Eventually, he swallows his hesitation in favor of something adjacent to honesty. It had served him well enough in prior interactions. Those had been sexually-charged, though, and that had tempered the visceral discomfort of his own vulnerability. Here, there was no buffer. ]
… I don't like needles. [ It sounds more ridiculous coming out of his own mouth than it had in his head. His shoulders hike up, lifting towards his ears as he hunkers down into himself. ] Don't laugh.
[Dazai tells him not to laugh. Chuuya does the opposite.
It isn't just how outlandish it sounds, though it's certainly a contributing factor. And it's not the fact that he takes some sort of joy out of him being uncomfortable, either. It's the fact that Chuuya had begun to overplay what might have been making Dazai so nervous. The conversation they'd had just a week or so prior, the argument that wasn't, still sits at the back of his mind. The doubt that this was all just something trivial, and the concern that it being trivial would bother Chuuya, all churn somewhere within him.
That confession feels like it's lancing the wound, letting some of the worst of his feelings out.]
Alright. You don't like needles. Got it. [He slides a hand over Dazai's thigh, carressing it gently.] Not gonna tell you it won't hurt. But I'm gonna do it above where your actual hip is. If it ain't right on the bone, it won't be as bad.
[He chews on his lip quietly, then adds:]
People say it's like a beesting. Don't know how true that is, but... [An idea strikes him. He lifts his eyes to Dazai's own.] Could go first, and tell you how it is?
[ He expects laughter. And if not that, he expects pity, and comfort, and for his own skin to burn with something wretched the instant Chuuya attempts that comfort. Instead, he finds himself strangely soothed when the hand not holding the tattoo gun smooths over his thigh. Abruptly, he aches for more than a cursory touch. Is this what he has been reduced to after all this time? Taking solace in whatever scraps of kindness Chuuya would toss in his general direction, the same as he had when they were younger?
At least this feels mildly less forced. When Chuuya had been the one to pull him out of the mire of his own thoughts, there had been a distinct discomfort in the action. He understands why, to a degree; when forced to grapple with a desire as maligned as Dazai's, even those who had weathered more than their own share of pain would likely feel uncomfortable. Though he has always known that Chuuya possessed his own tendencies, it stood to reason that they were different from Dazai's own. Having to navigate those murky waters would reasonably prove difficult.
More often than not, it hadn't helped. There was little that anyone could do to help. It was why Dazai was so buttoned up about his own misery, these days. It was easier not having to explain. It was easier to deal with the brunt of it himself, in whatever terrible way he chose.
Chuuya offers another way out. Dazai twists his lips up at him. ]
What if it's terrible and you can't convince me to go through with it after yours is already done? [ He pauses. ] Where would you event want yours?
[cw medical trauma] hello little brother it's time to maladaptively cope!

He somehow finds it within himself to say something that is aligned to his usual modus operandi, but lacking the usual barb. Instead, there is a… sickeningly obvious lilt of excitement. ]
Is Chuuya staking claim to me?
no subject
He's so screwed.]
no subject
But he can tell Chuuya wants him. He will also, assuredly, be able to feel the way Dazai, quietly pleased in the wake of their trip through the emotional wringer, thrills at that. They are momentarily of a mind as Dazai wonders how deep the feedback loop would thread.
He’s able to laugh, at least. Another part of him feels the strangest urge to cry. He hasn’t done so in years, and yet.
He tries to loop his arms around Chuuya’s neck, uncaring for the moment about how they are still very much in public. With how the space operated here, who rightly cared! ]
Does that mean Chuuya’s mine too, since we’re stuck together?
no subject
But for someone who liked to keep his cards close to his chest, maybe Dazai would appreciate the warning.]
no subject
] Are you?

still in hyperspace!
It's relatively easy to track him down, all things considered. He just has to follow the string of his easily recognizable thoughts. He keeps his mind relatively blank because, all of a sudden, he's intent on... sneaking up on Chuuya? Yeah. ]
no subject
If this is what somehow manages to kill me, I'm gonna lodge a complaint. Not that I know who to complain to. Maybe I'll deck that forest monster in the face. Bet I could take him. Definitely could with corruption.
You know. Normal thoughts. Normal and completely oblivious to the fact that someone has entered the room or is trying to startle him.]
no subject
He takes Chuuya's internal monologue on the chin as he creeps inside. When he is less than a foot away, he hops forward, puts both hands up, and loudly declares: ]
Boo!
no subject
The problem is that Chuuya's flailing has knocked the bowl into the air. While he's able to inadvertently clear out of the way, Dazai is in the splash zone of the remaining, ah... substance.
Oops.]
Oi!! [Chuuya finds he has to bite back laughter, even through his fury.] The hell are you doing, dipshit?! I coulda killed you.

He steps outside with a lazy sigh, then sets off in the general direction of the inn. Unhurriedly, mind you! ]

Immediately they deviate off course, aiming instead for the nearby trees.]
no subject
What he isn't anticipating is the direction Chuuya steers them in. He quirks a brow down at him. ]
What an unexpected pleasure, slug! Where exactly are we going?
no subject
Even if Dazai doesn't get the hint there, he'll understand soon enough. As soon as they're even slightly obscured by a tree, he shifts a hand to Dazai's shoulder and presses down, hard as he can. Given the awkward angle, it wouldn't be a surprise if Dazai managed to slip away but... He sure can try, right?]

But only for a moment. He drops to his knees, the corners of his mouth curling into a faint smirk. ]

continuation of august event thread -
[ Watching Chuuya painstakingly go through the motions of ensuring the tattoo gun is primed for their unwise task instills a confusing affection in Dazai.
no subject
When it's brought up again, however, Chuuya pauses. The gun remains in his fingers, but only out of necessity, lest he need to clean it all over again. He does pass it back and forth between his hands, contemplating what he ought to say to something like that.
It's a strange thing, the idea of Osamu Dazai being nervous. That, in a way, his weakness. Dazai rarely confessed to having those. It adds a level of gravity into the work Chuuya is doing, the closest thing he's come to doubting his decision up until this point.]
Okay. [To some it might sound flippant. Chuuya is only trying to acknowledge the fact that Dazai has said it.] Do you know why?
no subject
Eventually, he swallows his hesitation in favor of something adjacent to honesty. It had served him well enough in prior interactions. Those had been sexually-charged, though, and that had tempered the visceral discomfort of his own vulnerability. Here, there was no buffer. ]
… I don't like needles. [ It sounds more ridiculous coming out of his own mouth than it had in his head. His shoulders hike up, lifting towards his ears as he hunkers down into himself. ] Don't laugh.
no subject
He lifts his eyes to Dazai's own.] Could go first, and tell you how it is?
dazai-typical suicidal ideation cw
